One of our favorite cafés for a simple, but delicious breakfast, is Bakeri. True to the name, they specialize in baked goods and light breakfast and lunch.
There are two locations in Brooklyn (North Williamsburg and Greenpoint). The Williamsburg setting is humble, but they have an adorable patio hidden in the back (walk past the food case, past the kitchenette, past the restroom and through the door). Natural landscaping is distinguished by what looks to be an enormous grapevine, and there is plenty of shade. The defining feature of the patio is a koi pond. If you arrive early, they’ll allow the kids to feed the fish. My kids have given some of them names … can you guess which one is Spotty?
Big often orders the ‘savoury tartine.’ Especially when in-season, the tomatoes are divine. Big prefers scrambled eggs, rather than hard-boiled, so we ask for a substitution. And the baguette + butter … swoon! (NB, I feel compelled to warn you that on occasion, they substitute the baguette when the fresh batch isn’t yet ready.)

Little orders the ‘eggs and biscuit sandwich.’ The portion is generous (we usually remove half the biscuit to make it easier to fit into Little’s mouth), and it is accompanied by an arugula salad of reliably fresh greens. (My pet peeve is wilted or slimy greens.) Watch out if your kids don’t yet tolerate (mild) spice … the sandwich is served on the biscuit of the day, and that means it could feature jalapenos. We are always on a quest for the perfect bite, and a couple pieces of arugula with a bit of biscuit and egg is beautiful.
